My Everyday Tips for Weight Management Part 2: It Starts with Why

Have you ever wanted something so badly that you were willing to do whatever it took (excluding illegal activity) to get it? Your why was so compelling that the how was not as important.

For me, it is often easier to start with how instead of why.  Starting with why means I have to stop and think and dream, then create a plan. I am a doer. I would rather just jump in and do the thing.

Simon Sinek, in his book It Starts with Why, says, “Instead of asking, “WHAT do I need to do?” the questions must be asked, “WHY do I want to change WHAT I’m am doing in the first place.” Only then should you ask, “WHAT can I do to bring it to life?”

Weight management begins with discovering your why.

Do you need to make a change? Are you frustrated with your weight or health? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?

Visualize yourself in five years. If you keep doing what you are doing what will your life be like? Five years will come and go regardless of what you decide to do. It’s up to you.

Are changes hard? Yes, but you have done hard things before. Hard is not bad. You can do them again. Having a clear why can give you motivation when the how is super hard.

In 2012, I was thinking about going back to school to finish my degree. My dad said to me,”The years will pass regardless of whether or not you go to school.”  I had a choice. I could suck it up and achieve my goal, or let the time pass with no degree. It was not easy. There were a lot of frustration, tears, and all-nighters. Do I regret the hard work? Not for one second.

To those reading this blog who don’t have weight or health issues but are always striving for physical perfection, I ask you the same question. Why? Why are you doing what you are doing? What are you trying to achieve? Are you doing it for your health or for the approval of others? Sometimes we need to step back and look at our true motives. I have been there. I have been obsessed with trying to look my best to gain the approval from others. When you have been hurt as a kid because of your weight, those hurts are branded on your heart. You do whatever is necessary not to feel that pain again.

Over the past year, the Lord has healed my heart. It is still something I have to be mindful about, but it no longer controls me. My worth is not wrapped up in my appearance, or what others think of me. I enjoy health and fitness, because I feel better when I am healthy, and it allows me to be the best version of myself for those around me. That is my why.

My tips for weight management are not a quick fix. There is no pill, shake, magic potion, wrap, device, or diet that will give you long-term success. You are the secret to your success. Knowing your why can help you achieve it. You can do it!!

  1. Hey Becky! I am so glad you commented! I ate to hear about your mom’s friend. That is so sad. I am glad that you are having success again with your weight! That’s great! It’s crazy how life changes can affect us emotionally and then manifest in our weight. Having a why outside of ourself is such a more meaningful than simply for vanity. You will be glad you made the hard choices. I know you can do it! As far as the exercise, I’d just do what you can and not stress over it. Diet is 80% of the battle. You are such a sweet soul. Love you!
